2016 Application Form-SBC's B Corp Award
Welcome to SBC's B Corp Award entry page. This is your opportunity to receive recognition and publicity for your sustainable product or service. This is also your opportunity to enter the premiere Southern California Sustainable Business Award Competition. These are the 2016 Award Recipient Prizes! Please fill out the below application form for online submitting along with providing application fee in order to be considered as a candidate for SBC's B Corp Award. The application deadline is April 1, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. PST. The fee to process the application is $60.

SBC's B Corp Award
Presented to the B Corp and or Benefit Corporation located in Southern California or with headquarters in Southern California that receives the highest score from our panel of judges for its product or service that is sustainably focused and has resulted in the reduction of ecological impact. 

Who is eligible to apply for SBC’s B Corp Award?
Any B Corp or Benefit Corporation in Southern California that has a product or service that is  sustainably focused and has resulted in the reduction of ecological impact. B Corps are a new type of corporation that uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. Corporations officially become B Corps when they are certified by B Lab. The person filling out the application is required to be an employee, officer, or board member and or have a share in the ownership of the B Corp business or a Benefit Corporation.

Where should SBC’s B Corp Award applications be sent?
SBC’s B Corp Award applications should be submitted via the Application Form below.

What is the deadline for applications?
The application deadline is April 1, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. PST. 

What must the application for SBC’s B Corp Award contain?
1) Filled out online Application Form.
2) Submitted Pitch Essay via the online Application Form
3) Paid online as part of the online Application Form the $60 processing fee.

What is the judging and criteria for selecting the recipient of SBC’s B Corp Award?
The judging will be performed by a panel comprised of sustainable business leaders. 

The judging panel will award points to the candidate businesses based on the businesses written submission. The written submission for this award is referred to by the title, “Pitch Essay.” The Pitch Essay will be evaluated by each entry’s product or service demonstrated commitment to the following evaluation categories:

  • Sustainable Benefit of Product or Service
  • Commitment to Hire Sustainable Vendors
  • Socially Responsible Practices With Developing the Product or Service
  • Community Outreach
  • Financial Viability
  • And B Corp Current Score if you are a B Corp.


An additional ten points will be awarded to each applicant that is a SBC Member. You can find information regarding the benefits of SBC Membership, the different SBC Membership options and how to join by visiting Why SBC Membership.

A scale between 1-100 will be given for each of the above evaluation categories by the judges, with 1 being the least value and 100 the highest value. The scores will be tallied and certified by an independent accounting agency. The top 20 highest scoring candidates will be notified via e-mail on April 2nd. The winning candidate will be announced during the Fifth Annual SBC Industry Achievement Awards Ceremony on April 19th between 8:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. and be presented with SBC’s Giving Tree Award Trophy. All candidates are encouraged to attend and if they cannot attend it is highly recommended that the candidate send someone representing your venture to accept the Giving Tree Award Trophy during the award's ceremony.

About the Pitch Essay:
Candidates are asked to provide a 500 word or less Pitch Essay regarding how your product or service is sustainably focused and has resulted in the reduction of ecological impact. Be as specific as possible incorporating into your essay the evaluation categories of:

  • Sustainable Benefit of Product or Service
  • Commitment to Hire Sustainable Vendors
  • Socially Responsible Practices with Developing the Product or Service
  • Community Outreach
  • Financial Viability
  • And Current B Corp Score if you are a B Corp.


The use of numerical examples is encouraged whenever possible to quantify your essay. Please note that the final component of this pitch essay is the current B Corp Score that B Lab certified if you are a B Corp.
